Commemoration Operation Quick Anger 2023: Seven months after the lost Battle of Arnhem (Sepetember 1944), a second attempt was made to liberate the city. This second attempt was given the name Operation Anger, more known as Operation Quick Anger. The Canadian General Charles Foulkes was the commander of the Canadian troops. He ordered to cross the river IJssel between the village of Westervoort and the Enka Factory, located east of Arnhem. On 12 April 1945, an infantry division made the crossing over the IJssel near Westervoort and conquered Fort Westervoort and the Enka Factory. In the week before the IJssel crossing, a Bailey bridge (a prefabricated bridge) had already been built at Doornenburg. In the early hours of 13 April 1945, the Bailey Bridge was sailed into his place and a huge number of Jeeps, tanks and other armoured transport and fighting vehicles were able to cross the river IJssel. On 14 April 1945, the city of Arnhem was liberated. Operation Quick Anger was conducted in conjunction with Operation Cannon Shot, an operation to cross the IJssel at Gorssel and Wilp. Within a month the whole of the Netherlands was liberated.
Over forty authentic WWII military vehicles and their owners gathered at Vredenburg House in Westervoort for the Operation Quick Anger memorial tour and commemoration of Operation Quick Anger. In our own Ford GPW Jeep, together with other WWII vehicles, we drove through the landscape of the Liemers and the Montferland Hills, rural regions east of the river IJssel. The tour ended at the Memorial Crossing to Liberation, a war monument on the east bank of the IJssel at Westervoort, where we attended the memorial and wreath-laying ceremony. During the liberation of the Netherlands, 7,600 Canadian soldiers lost their lives, they are buried in military war cemeteries across the Netherlands. The Groesbeek Canadian War Cemetery contains the graves of 2,339 Canadian soldiers and also 276 British soldiers, among them soldiers who were killed in Operation Quick Anger. The Canadian War Cemetery Groesbeek is a so-called 'open' cemetery, which means that Canadian soldiers who died in WWII and were discovered post war can still be buried here.
